Artist's Comments

I'm ecstatic about this piece.

To make a long story short, William has a thorn from the Crown of Thorns disintegrated in his bloodstream and as a result has True Faith 5.

I wanted the art to reflect this boon and create an image of William as some sort of angelic figure. I tried to make it somewhat "religious" but with everything having a magical twist by employing the following:

-The use of an astrological circle as a halo
-The use of flight propelled by magic, not wings
-A lance of magical fire, to be like an angel's sword
-William's downward gaze, as angels often do

Let me know what you guys think and whether or not it feels somewhat "angelic".

PS. This piece reminds me of Ludovico Ariosto's Orlando Furioso for some reason, hence the title.

PPS. The tradition of reusing heads in my art seems to live.

My thoughts... awesome. As in inspiring awe. Very impressive.

I have to say that even without the explanation of what you wanted to achieve, I could see the angelic look to this piece. It does lend itself to the magic side as well, though unless I hadn't looked at your other work, I would have missed that part.

Great job though!

If love is the key....I am the door. I only ask that you don't abuse the key.

Probably not useful this late in the game, but I feel that I can only see the angelic figure after you mention it. The reason is pure and simple: angels have wings.
To give the effect of wings I would have rumpled the jacket into a wing-like shape, prhaps had lighting from the back that shone outward like wings, perhaps even magic arching up like wings.
But otherwise, I think the angelic figure is more of an afterthought.
Don't get me wrong, this is an awesome piece. But angelic? Not really.

Thank you so much for your thoughts on my piece! It's very touching to know that the image is worthy of the attention that you've given it, and that it inspired a critical and intelligent analysis. ^_^

You're absolutely right about all of those things. While, I had considered creating wings out of magical energy, I was worried I would be going over the edge into obviously "angel" territory. I suppose my intention was for the angelic tone of the image to be subtle, but the theme, no doubt, ended up as one of those things that's only apparent to the creator and those who are told to look for it.

And even then, like you said, not really . . . !
